FREE Quick & Easy Basket Crochet Pattern

Earlier this year, in June, I moved out with my partner! And with this big change, I have found myself absolutely obsessed with decorating every single inch of our new home. As a chronically ill person, it's difficult to do that when I don't have a whole lot of income, so I'm DIY-ing as much as possible!
This basket came to my mind when I found myself wishing we had a basket in our bathroom, to pop used toilet rolls in. I wanted something small, but not too small, and something cute to brighten up the otherwise very bland room. This is seriously the most basic pattern ever, so if you're a beginner - I promise this one's right up your alley! Note: The colour change looks super cool, fresh & intentional, but truthfully - I ran out of the pink yarn. I'd bought the yarns 5+ years ago & it has since been discontinued, so I had to be creative. I actually love the look of the colour change (I explain how to make it look so neat below) and I think it adds a modern touch!
I'll walk you through the pattern below.
This is a US abbreviated pattern.
Abbreviations used in this pattern:
MR: Magic Ring
Ch: Chain
Sl st: Slip Stitch
DC: Double Crochet
RSC: Reverse Single Crochet - also known as a Crab Stitch.
Inc: Increase
F/O: Fasten Off
BLO: Back Loop Only
Dc-Inc = Double Crochet Increase (So you'll do two DC into a single stitch)
Materials
Yarn: Any Super Bulky weight yarn - referably Cotton or a 50/50 Cotton mix as it’ll keep its shape better! I used Moda Vera Hampton Soft Chunky Cotton Blend from Spotlight, but it has since been discontinued.
Crochet Hook: I used a 7mm hook. My favourite brand currently is the Clover crochet hooks - they're seriously a dream to work with.
Scissors & a yarn needle: Any of both will do!
How to do a Crab Stitch border (RSC)
A crab stitch (also known as a Reverse Single Crochet) is essentially just a single crochet done backwards - so you’re working from left to right, rather than right to left as you usually would. So instead of crocheting in the next stitch to the left, you’ll bring your hook around and insert it into the stitch to the right, completing a single crochet there instead - this may feel slightly awkward to do to begin with.
It might look a little odd for the first couple of crab stitches, but once you’ve done a few, you’ll see how pretty it turns out! It’s such a nice way to finish off a border.
Let's begin!
IMPORTANT: We’ll be crocheting each round & ending it with a sl st into the first st, and chaining 2 to begin each new round. Make sure you do this for the whole basket, except for the final row when we do the border.
Start by making an MR.
R1. DC 12 into the MR, sl st into the first st (12)
R2. ch2, dc-Inc into the same st & in each st all around, sl st into the first st (24)
R3. ch2, (dc, dc-inc)*12, sl st into the first st (36)
R4. ch2, (2dc, dc-inc)*12, sl st into the first st (48)
R5. ch2, BLO: Dc in each st all around, sl st into the first st (48)
R6-10. ch2, Dc in each st all around, sl st into the first st (48) - 5 rounds total
If you’d like to switch to a new colour for the last round, do so now! Or, continue from R12 with your current colour.
R11. Attach your new colour, ch 2. Sl st into the BLO of each st around (this will give it a cleaner colour change!) & sl st into the first st. (48)
R12. Ch2, Dc in each st all around, sl st into the first st. (48)
R13. Now we’re doing the crab stitch border! Ch1, then do your RSC into each st all the way around, fastening off at the end & weaving in the tail.
And now you’re all done! Basket complete ❤️
